Callala by Raintalker Music Video (2026)

Speck of nature must escape human trappings to return to its beach home.

Winter Collective Exhibition, 2026, Cuillty Gallery, UWA

This music video set to “Callala” by Sydney based band Raintalker, depicts a Speck of nature escaping human trappings. The song was written in response to a proposal to develop Callala Bay in the Jarvis Bay region, NSW. The band saw the importance in preserving the natural state of the bay and noting that its development would take away a little of its magic.  The music video opens with the Speck, a human shaped speck of nature, waking up having been brought home from the beach on a pair of sandy shoes. It runs to the kitchen where it observes a boy making cereal and defies gravity to be thrown around the room. Eventually, the Speck lands in a bottle of milk and is subsequently poured into a bowl of cereal. Discovering an unpleasant taste, the boy spits out his mouthful to discover the Speck sitting among the muck. Both scowl. The Speck then hitches a ride on the family dog to make it outside and into the garden. There, it despairs at the unnatural ways gardens are kept alive; watering, fertilizer and the final straw is a pesticide spray. Speck is disgusted but is swept away by a leaf blower and gets tangled in a plastic bag. The Speck and the bag get tumbled in the wind and finally stop in the gutter next to the beach. Speck overcomes dogs and running shoes to finally make it to the beach and turn back into a blade of dune grass. The film method was inspired by Mike Patterson and Candace Reckinger’s 1985 music video for A-HA’s Take on Me and features rotoscoped animation overlayed on live action. This film was built using multiple layers in Adobe Premier Pro.
